The widespread consideration of metal t-butoxide as non-nucleophilic base is highly prejudiced,  because of which a possible role of t-butoxide anion as a nucleophile has been largely overlooked.
Hye Sung has verified that t-butoxide can be used as potent nucleophile in diverse organic transformations and confirmed its unusual action by several spectroscopic analyses for the first time.
The result entitled "Functionalisation of esters via 1,3-chelation using NaOtBu: mechanistic investigations and synthetic applications" has been accepted for publication in Organic Chemistry Frontiers.
