About AMR

About antimicrobial resistance
When microorganisms including virus, bacteria, fungi and protozoa are exposed to antibiotics, mutant microorganisms that are resistance to antibiotics are survived as a way of escaping from the antibiotic pressure. Therefore, the occurrence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is indispensable as long as we continue to use antibiotics. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an alternative way to control the pathogenic microorganisms without causing AMR.

How serious antimicrobial resistance
AMR keeps threatening human health and society due to the occurrence of new resistant microorganisms against known or even new antibiotics. AMR not only causes serious problem in hospitalized patients but also threatens community. Therefore, antibiotic resistance increases the cost of medical care and lowers the quality of life of patients. According to the UK government’s review on AMR by Jim O’Neill it was mentioned that “Drug resistant infections are already on the rise with numbers suggesting that up to 50,000 lives are lost each year to antibiotic-resistant infections in Europe and the US alone. Globally, at least 700,000 die each year of drug resistance in illnesses such as bacterial infections, malaria, HIV/AIDS or tuberculosis.” Furthermore, in this report, it was predicted that, by 2050, 10 million people will die every year due to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) unless a global response to the problem of AMR is mounted. Therefore, global alliance against AMR is urgently needed.
