본 강좌는 여론 및 정치행위에 대한 태도, 투표 결정, 정치 참여등에 대한 이론적, 경험적 관점들을 소개한다. 본 강좌를 통해, 학생들은 어떻게 정치에 대한 인식 및 여론이 형성되고 또 변화하는지 배우게 될 것이며, 나아가 정치 일반에 있어 그 영향력에 대해 배우게 될 것이다. 또한 본 강좌는 시민들이 자신들을 대표하는 정치인들을 선거라는 제도를 통하여 어떻게 견제하는지, 이른바 선거책임성에 대한 이론 및 연구에 대해서도 소개할 것이다. 여론 및 선거책임성에 대한 이론 및 실증적 연구가 가장 활발하게 행해지고 있는 미국 정치를 중심으로 강좌가 진행될 것이나, 다른 나라 및 비교 정치 맥락에서의 여론 및 선거책임성에 대한 연구 역시도 다루어질 계획이다.

This course will introduce both the theoretical and empirical aspects of public opinion, political attitudes, voting decisions, and political participation. The course will also discuss both how citizens’ thinking about politics is formed and changed as well as the role of public opinion in politics. Furthermore, the course will examine electoral accountability: we will examine whether and how citizens are (or not) able to use elections as the instrument of constraint their representatives’ actions and decisions. The course will focus mainly on the theories and empirical grounds established in the context of American politics where public opinion and electoral accountability research has intensely been studied. However, discussion on other countries or comparative analysis in this field will be also covered.
